Web Pages
Q. How do I get Web space at Penn State?
A. To apply, you must first read through the Personal Web FAQ.
Once you have read the FAQ, you must take and pass the individual Web space test linked at step 1.4.
Only faculty, staff and students with active Penn State Access Accounts can apply.
Q. Where can I find my personal Penn
State Web page on the Internet?
A. You can find your page at http://www.personal.psu.edu/xyz123 where
xyz123 is your Penn State Access Account user id.
Q. What do I need to make a Web Page?
A. You will need a Web Page editor such as Microsoft FrontPage, Nvu or 1st Page.
Nvu and 1st Page can be downloaded for free. You do not need to know HTML to use these programs.
Q. How do I upload my Web pages to my Web site?
A. We recommend logging into the Penn State Portal at https://portal.psu.edu
and using the PASS Explorer. It is very easy to use and works through
any internet browser without having to install any new programs.
Alternatively, Penn State students can use a secure FTP client program
such as SSH for Windows or MacSSH for Macs, available at https://downloads.its.psu.edu/.
Use the instructions at http://css.its.psu.edu/internet/ssh/
for these clients. Mounting the PASS Gateway is not recommended for
World Campus students.
Q. I see a couple of folders in here. Which one am I supposed to put my Web page in?
A. By default, you start in your Home Directory when you first
access your PASS space. You need to put your Web page and associated
files in the [www] directory for them to be seen on the Internet. In
the PASS Explorer, choose "My Personal Web Space (ePortfolio)" from the
"Browse To" dropdown menu or select the [www] folder in the directory
content listing so that it's highlighted. Then click on the "Change
Folder" button at the bottom.
Q. What is an index.html or index page? Why do I need one?
A. Index.html is the first page or default home page of your Web site. A
basic index page was created when you applied for Web space; you will
need to replace it. When you upload your new index page, a popup window
will alert you that "The file _____ already exists in PASS, do you want to
overwrite it?" - Click on "Ok". All the other Web pages you
create for your Web site should be linked from your home page.
Q. How can I organize the files for my Web Site?
A. First, on your computer, create a folder to hold your Penn State Web
pages. Whenever you create a new Web page for your Penn State Web site,
you will first save the file there. This will mirror how
your [www] directory on the server is set up.
To keep your pictures organized, for each project create within your
computer's Web pages folder a separate project folder to
hold them. Move your pictures into the project folder before
starting your Web page and remember to save your Web page to the Web
page folder (not your project folder) before adding
your first picture to ensure the images are referenced relatively.
As mentioned in the Personal
Web FAQ Helpful Tips section, remove any spaces in file
names, replacing them with underscores "_" and avoid using
capital letters whenever possible to prevent name confusion.
When it's time to upload your Web page(s) to the Web site, remember to
create any new folders in the [www] directory and to upload your Web
pages and images to the correct locations.
Q. I am having a problem with my Web
page.
