Internet Explorer Questions

Q. How do I delete cookies and temporary Internet files?
A. Here are a few easy steps:
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on "Tools", and then click on "Internet Options."
  3. At the top you will see tabs with the labels General, Security, Privacy, etc. Make sure you are on the General tab.
  4. You will see three buttons in the middle of the Internet Options window (Delete Cookies, Delete Files, and Settings) under the title "Temporary Internet Files." Click on the "Delete Cookies" button.
  5. A pop-up window will appear that says "Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?" Click "OK" to continue. Your mouse pointer should turn into an hourglass while the cookies are being deleted.
  6. Once the cookies are deleted, click on the "Delete Files" button.
  7. A pop-up window will appear asking you to delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files. Select the box beside "Delete all off line content" to place a check in it. Click "OK" to continue. Your mouse pointer will again turn into an hourglass while the files are being deleted (this could take a few minutes depending on how often you do this).
  8. Click "Apply" to apply all the changes.
  9. Click the "Settings" button. Select "Every Visit to the Page" rather then the default of "Automatically." Click "OK."
  10. Click "OK" to close the Internet Options window.

Q. How do I adjust security settings in Internet Explorer?
A. Here are a few easy steps:
  1. Open up Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on "Tools," and then click on "Internet Options."
  3. At the top you will see tabs with the labels General, Security, Privacy, etc. Make sure you are on the Security tab.
  4. You will now see the four zones for which you can adjust security settings (Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, Restricted Sites).
  5. First, click on the "Internet" zone and check the current Security level for the zone. If the zone is set to "Medium," then you don't have to do anything. If it is set to "Custom," click the "Default Level" button to change the security level to "Medium".
  6. Next, click on the "Trusted Sites" zone.
  7. Check to see what the security settings are for this zone. If it shows as "Low," then you don't have to do anything. If it shows as "Custom," click on the "Default Level" button and it should change to "Low."
  8. On the middle right of the window, you will see a button labeled "Sites." Click on this button.
  9. Another pop-up window appears that will allow you to add and remove Web sites from the "Trusted Sites" zone. First, make sure the box beside "Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zone" is unchecked. Now enter https://cms.psu.edu into the field under "Add this Web site to the zone" and click the "Add" button. You should now see the site listed in the window under "Web sites." Do the same thing for https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu and *.psu.edu
  10. Click OK to close the Trusted Sites pop-up window and accept the changes.
  11. Click "Apply" on the Internet Options window to apply the changes, then click "OK" to close the window.
